Miron: Legalize drugs to stop violence

End violence and the recession by not spending taxpayers' money, but ELIMINATING a failing policy? Sounds too good to be true, but it's not.

Written by a senior lecturer in economics at Harvard University, this is one of the best concise, comprehensive evaluations of our failing drug policy that I've read. Please take a minute to read it! Click here for the link to CNN.com's article.

Keep in mind that LEGALIZED DRUGS WOULD BE REGULATED AND TAXED. No free-for-alls; abuse and misuse would not be tolerated, in the same way that those who drink alcohol cannot drive under the influence.

This is a great argument, but most people will ultimately have moral issues with drug use based on force-fed, flawed information they've believed all of their ignorant lives. Here is a list of some of the most retarded responses posted on the discussion board (that they, thankfully, disabled):

"Rape hurts people too. Should we legalize that also?"-James

My response: Well James, Rape and Legal Substance use are apples and oranges. Go back to your Southern Baptist church and get saved, because you are dumb as fuck and that is a far greater injustice to mankind than smoking a joint.

"another plausible approach is to also penalize drug users as accomplices to murder. All the pacifist hippies out there that use 'recreational' drugs do not want to open their eyes and realize that it is them, with their money, who is paying for the violence and murders.

I live in the mexican border (in Chihuahua) and I experience everyday the consequences of their drug addiction. There is currently no short term solution, so why not properly punish the end user as well?"-jepb

My response: Excuses me, jepb, but I think 'pacifist hippie' is an oxymoron. Those hippies, whose peaceful protests earned so many minority groups civil freedoms, were quite visible and motivated. Wouldn't they then be considered 'activists'? Far-fetched, I know. However, not nearly as unreasonable and illogical as your notion of cause-and-effect regarding the black market. Please look up the word "intent" and reevaluate the disjointed connection that you've made between hippies (you should actually look that one up, too) and violence. Learn to conjugate your verbs. It is no surprise to me that someone from a place called Chihuahua has the mental capacity of a small dog.

"Is that Miron or Moron?

So after you legalize the drugs and people start doing really stupid things what do you do then?

The idea is just give up then?

With that moronic thinking we would all be speaking German or Japanese today.

Idiots like Mr. Miron should keep their opinions to themselves!"-CK

My response: It appears, CK, that you don't get out much. WHEN "People start doing really stupid things"? WHEN happened a long time ago, my dear. And most of them weren't under the influence! The asinine connection with our victory in the second World War is just hilarious. I'm glad you remembered something from your high school history class, but clearly giving up a failing, one could even say DESTRUCTIVE, effort to eradicate drug use is only going to promote individual freedom! That idiot with his opinion is a Harvard economist, and considering your level of thought, learning to speak German or Japanese could only help you develop an understanding of culture that you so desperately need.

There are far too many of these. If I kept going, I'd get nothing accomplished today. Point is, educated people know that legalization could help us solve many of our problems. Talk to your friends about it. Smart people need to get the message out there!
